Starting your first CV can feel overwhelming - especially if you’ve never had a job before. But the truth is, everyone starts somewhere, and employers don’t expect you to have loads of experience.

At NextStep Scotland, we help young people build CVs that highlight potential - not just past jobs.

What to include in your first CV

1. Personal Details

  • Full name

  • Phone number

  • Professional email address

2. Personal Statement (Very Important)

This is a short paragraph at the top of your CV that explains:

  • Who you are

  • What you're looking for

  • Your strengths

Example:

“Motivated and reliable school leaver seeking an opportunity to gain experience in a warehouse or retail environment. Strong work ethic, quick learner, and eager to develop new skills.”

3. Education

List:

  • Your school or college

  • Subjects (especially Maths & English)

  • Any predicted or achieved grades

4. Skills

Even without work experience, you still have skills:

  • Communication

  • Teamwork (sports, school projects)

  • Timekeeping

  • Problem-solving

5. Experience (Think wider than jobs)

You can include:

  • School projects

  • Volunteering

  • Helping family businesses

  • Clubs or sports teams

Key Tip:

👉 Employers hiring young people are looking for attitude, not perfection.
